FAQ

What’s a Fab Lab?
“Fab Lab” is short for Fabrication Laboratory. It’s a collection of tools and technology that can be used to create just about anything. Certain scale limitations apply, but there are no limitations on what you can dream up and make… within our laws of physics, that is.

But really, what exactly is available at the Jersey City Fab Lab?
Our current array of tools and processes includes a fully-equipped wood shop, a vinyl cutter, 3D printers (plastics, resin, and clay), a basic electronics workbench, and a laser cutter (this cuts or engraves wood, acrylic, leather, glass, aluminum, rubber stamps & fabric into whatever shapes you want and renders graphics or photos onto a huge array of materials) . We also have a considerable array of  hand tools and finishing tools. Metal workers can use our metal brake, and laser engrave metals.

Who can use the Jersey City Fab Lab?
The plan is, anyone who is trained to… or, you can hire a tech to get something amazing done. We have basic and advanced training classes and workshops to get you up to speed. Kids and adults can take workshops — no need to be a member to take workshops.

Who runs the Jersey City Fab Lab?
The folks from Towhee Co. will, and possibly you if you have the skills, expertise, time, and dedication. We’re actively looking for new team members to get our vision up and running, and to keep it evolving.

Is that it?
Actually, there’s more… We see this as a seed of an educational lab, a business and brand-building incubator, a product prototyping lab, and an X-University. We want to make a place where a vibrant community of designers, makers, artists, and entrepreneurs can come together and make great things happen.
